Clevedon cars have a specific problem, and it is not the one people expect. The Severn here has one of the largest tidal ranges in the world, and it does not carry clean blue water — it carries silt. In a westerly off the estuary, what settles on a car parked anywhere between Salthouse Fields and Ladye Bay is a fine brown film with sea salt suspended in it. It looks like ordinary road dirt. It is not. It sets hard, it is mildly abrasive, and if you take a sponge to it in a supermarket car park you will put swirl marks straight into the clearcoat.
The second Clevedon problem is gulls. Cars left along the seafront, near the Pier or on the roads above Marine Parade collect droppings acidic enough to etch clearcoat in a couple of warm days. We see more etched roofs and bonnets in BS21 than anywhere else we work. Caught early it polishes out; left through a summer it needs correcting properly. That is why a lot of Clevedon enquiries start as a valet and end up as a one-stage correction.

The standard Clevedon job is a two-stage decontamination before anything else happens: a snow-foam dwell to lift the silt film without touching the paint, then a chemical iron fallout treatment and a clay pull to take out the salt crystals and brake dust bonded into the lacquer. Only after that do we consider polishing. Skip that order on a seafront car and you grind estuary grit through the paint.
For cars that live within a few streets of the water, a ceramic coating genuinely earns its money here in a way it does not further inland. The salt film sheets off a coated panel with a plain rinse instead of needing a contact wash every fortnight — and it is the fortnightly contact washing, not the salt itself, that swirls seafront cars to death.
Clevedon splits sharply between older streets with no off-road parking and newer estates with generous drives. We work in both.
Very few of these houses have a drive, so we work kerbside. The rig fits in a single parking bay, we run nothing across the pavement, and we do not need your tap. If your street is tight, say so at booking and we will come early while spaces are still free.
We can work in a public bay along the front if that is where your car lives, weather permitting. It is exposed — on a strong westerly we will suggest moving somewhere sheltered rather than fighting spray while trying to dry panels.
Standard driveway job with plenty of room, usually the easiest bookings we take. A full correction needs roughly two car widths so we can work all the way round with a polisher.
Leave the keys and we work while you are inside. Common for the estates on the M5 J20 approach — we are set up and gone before lunch on a valet.
The big one. A winter of estuary salt plus gritted lanes over the moor. Full decontamination wash, then we assess whether the paint needs a machine stage.
Gull season and heat together. Etching bakes in fast. Worth a mid-summer check if the car sits anywhere near the front.
Coating or sealant refresh before the westerlies start. Getting protection on before winter is worth considerably more than correcting after it.

It will not stop it landing, but it stops it bonding. On a coated panel the silt-and-salt film rinses off with plain water instead of needing a contact wash, and contact washing is what actually causes swirl marks on seafront cars. For a car parked within sight of the water it is the single most useful thing you can do to it.
Usually. If it is fresh and the mark is still glossy under the residue, a light machine polish clears it. If it has sat through hot weather and you can feel a crater with a fingernail, it has gone through the clearcoat and needs a full correction on that panel, sometimes more.
