Long Ashton is the join between two different kinds of motoring. The cars do Bristol commuting — the A370, the Ashton Road corridor, stop-start traffic into the city and back — so they pick up exactly the contamination profile of a city car: heavy brake dust on the front wheels, industrial fallout across the horizontal panels, and the fine gritty film that stop-start traffic throws up onto lower doors and sills.
But they come home to a village driveway rather than a permit bay. That combination is unusual and it is genuinely useful, because the contamination that a city car accumulates is best dealt with by exactly the kind of unhurried, space-hungry work that a driveway allows. Commuter mileage, and what it leaves on the car.
Brake dust is the defining contamination on a BS41 car, and it is worse than it looks. Stop-start commuting generates a lot of it, and it comes off the pads hot — hot enough to embed into wheel lacquer and into the clearcoat on the lower quarters rather than simply resting on top. Once embedded it corrodes in place, which is why neglected alloys develop a permanent brown speckle that no amount of wheel cleaner touches. It is iron, sitting inside the finish.
The fix is chemical rather than physical: an iron fallout remover that dissolves the particles so they can be rinsed away, followed by a clay pull for anything left bonded. Doing this two or three times a year is the difference between wheels that stay right for a decade and wheels that need refurbishing at five years. It is the least glamorous thing we do and probably the highest-value.

That is embedded brake dust, not surface dirt — hot iron particles that have bonded into the lacquer and are corroding in place. It needs a dedicated iron fallout remover to dissolve them chemically, then a clay pull for anything remaining. Caught in time it comes back fully; left for years it will have pitted the lacquer permanently.
